Introduction to Digital Self-Defense
The Austin Capital Data Digital Self-Defense Series

By Gunnar Kleemann

Introduction
A digital citizen is a person using information technology (IT) in order to engage in society, politics, and government. In an era where technology and digital platforms are integral to our everyday lives, the role of digital citizenship is ever more critical. As in the material world, operating in the digital world entails risks. Some of these risks are not obvious and can make us vulnerable to crimes or inconveniences. Awareness and understanding of these risks are crucial to reduce vulnerabilities and moderate harm. An educated person is not a good target.
In the “Digital Self-Defense Kit” we present a free and open resource pack in which we outline the best practices that we could find for digital self-defense. We have put the best recommendations that our research revealed in the linked manual. However, we don’t guarantee that these materials are perfect. Please do your own research and if you have better information, pass it along so we can improve our shared resource. We would love to see our manual used to make the digital world a safer and more balanced digital world. Austin Capital Data’s mission is empowerment and enablement through education.
